Set high above the Pacific Ocean, this stunning home in Pacifica, California enjoys one of the most iconic views on the Northern California coast. With its cliffside setting and unobstructed ocean vistas, the property offers endless potential for outdoor living. However, the existing courtyard wasn’t quite keeping up.

Though the home’s original brick patio had charm, it no longer aligned with the homeowners’ vision. The space felt constrained, and natural wear from coastal conditions had taken its toll over time. What the homeowners wanted was a refined, easy-to-maintain outdoor area that made the most of their surroundings. Thanks to the salty air of their seaside location, they also knew they needed something that could stand up to the elements while elevating their everyday lifestyle.

Designed for Coastal Living

From the beginning, the goal was clear: create a space that fully embraces the panoramic views, enhances functionality, and blends beautifully with the home’s architecture. We also know we’d select long-lasting materials that can withstand the challenges of coastal living.

We replaced the original patio with a custom-designed paving stone courtyard in soft, coastal-inspired colors that complement the home and landscape. The expanded layout opened up the space dramatically, creating a seamless flow that now feels more connected to its breathtaking surroundings. It’s a timeless look that brings both elegance and endurance to the property. (Note on pic below: We don't do doors, but these homeowners were upgrading theirs while we were at their home.)

Purposeful Zones for Everyday Enjoyment

To help the homeowners make the most of their backyard, our design team created intentional zones for relaxation, entertaining, and soaking in the view.

A cozy fire pit nook is framed by low seat walls that double as extra seating while providing a buffer against the cool coastal breeze. This creates a warm, comfortable spot to unwind while listening to the waves crash against the rocks just below. In the other corner, a raised platform for the hot tub offers an elevated perspective of the ocean, with wide steps that add both function and flair.

There’s also ample room for dining and lounging, giving the homeowners flexible spaces for quiet moments or hosting guests and outdoor parties. A retaining wall built in complementary hues enhances safety near the cliff’s edge while adding structure and visual interest to the space.

Connected by Design

Because the property sits on a terraced lot, we also designed and installed a set of matching paver stairs that lead from the courtyard down to the landscaped side yard. These stairs offer safe and stylish access between levels and were built with long-term performance in mind. Another must-have for the unique demands of oceanfront living.
