Maximizing Space: Small Backyard Makeover With A Big Impact

Maximizing Space: A Backyard Makeover with Lasting Impact

In the heart of Lake Oswego, Oregon, System Pavers recently completed a backyard transformation that turned a once-sloped, underused yard into a beautiful, functional outdoor living space. Like many homeowners, our clients wanted more than what their existing setup offered. The small, aging wooden deck didn’t provide enough room for the way they envisioned enjoying the outdoors—hosting friends, spending time with family, and relaxing year-round in comfort and style.

With a clear vision and a trusted team in place, we got to work creating a solution that felt just right for the home. A remodel that would serve the homeowners well for generations to come.

From Slope to Usable Space

The original backyard had great potential, but the natural slope made much of it difficult to enjoy. Muddy areas and uneven ground limited both function and flow, especially during Oregon’s rainy seasons. Our goal was to change that by maximizing space in every possible way, turning a tricky layout into a smart, stylish setup that fits the way the homeowners live.

To do that, we started by building a stable foundation to support a split-level paver patio, carefully designed to take advantage of the yard’s natural grade. The result? A dramatic increase in usable square footage, without sacrificing the beauty of the surroundings.

A Deck That Connects the Indoors to the Outdoors

Just outside the back door, we installed a sleek, composite decking platform—a small, sustainably crafted deck that serves as the perfect transition between the home and the new paver patio. With its slim profile and built-in stair lighting, the deck feels intentional and elevated, while keeping safety and long-term durability front and center.

The composite decking material was a smart choice for this project: it looks great year after year, resists weather and wear, and needs little maintenance—exactly what the homeowners were looking for.

A Patio That Works for Everyday Life

Step down from the deck and you’re welcomed into a thoughtfully designed paver patio with multiple defined zones for outdoor living. There’s space for grilling, dining, and relaxing—each area flowing naturally into the next thanks to the clean lines and subtle grade transitions.

To help manage the slope and provide structure, we incorporated short retaining walls at the patio’s corners. Not only do they help shape the space, but they add an architectural element that makes the yard feel polished and complete. They also double as built-in seating for added convenience! One of those curved sitting walls surrounds a small hangout zone that’s become a favorite spot for spending time with friends around their portable fire pit. This cozy corner adds warmth and charm—perfect for roasting marshmallows, chatting under the stars, or just staying toasty on a cool Pacific Northwest evening.

Discreet under-lighting along the retaining wall adds just-right ambiance for evenings outdoors, helping make the space usable well after the sun goes down.

Thoughtful Details, Seamless Design

We believe every element of a remodel should feel intentional. This Lake Oswego project was no exception. One standout example: rather than removing a large tree near the back of the house, we carefully framed it with paving stones, allowing it to remain part of the landscape while creating a clean, defined look that blends natural and hand built elements beautifully.

We also installed a custom pillar by one of the home’s secondary entrances, adding both visual interest and a sense of structure to the overall design.

These little details may not be the first thing you notice—but they’re what make the space feel cohesive, complete, and built to last.

A Backyard Built to Enjoy

Today, the homeowners have a backyard that’s clean, comfortable, and completely transformed. The mud is gone. The slope is tamed. And in its place is a landscape that’s easy to maintain, fun to use, and ready for everyday life.

By combining durable paver patio surfaces, sustainable composite decking, and a design focused on maximizing space, we were able to turn a backyard challenge into an outdoor living success story.
