Pergola FAQs

Have questions? This is a short list of our most frequently asked questions about pergolas. For more information, please call 877-728-3778.

  • Backyard pergolas are open-air structures that can either be free-standing or attached to the side of a home. Most outdoor pergolas feature a flat or peaked roof. Gazebos, on the other hand, are enclosed structures with open sides and a cone-shaped roof.

  • Pergolas are used to create a shaded outdoor living space. They are often attached to the side of a home and extend out over a patio. Outdoor pergolas can also be free-standing and installed in gardens and other outdoor spaces as a decorative yet functional element.

  • A permit is typically required to build a pergola. Because System Pavers takes care of everything from design and installation to project management and beyond, your design consultant can help confirm if a permit is required for installing a pergola in your area.

  • Many different styles of pergolas are offered in California in Orange County, Los Angeles, Inland Empire, Newbury Park, San Diego, North Bay, South Bay, and Sacramento, as well as in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. However, not all styles are available in all locations. For example, louvred pergolas (a pergola with shaded slates that can open and close) are currently only available in the Seattle, Portland, and Denver areas. You may see a picture of a pergola that is not currently available in your region as availability is subject to change. Speak to your System Pavers design consultant to see what's offered in your area.

  • Most pergolas are made of wood, a wood composite or aluminum. We mainly do aluminum because it is lightweight but very strong. Aluminum does not decay over time and requires much less maintenance than wood. It can come in various colors as well.

  • Pergolas come in variety of roof styles, including a solid top, louvered or lattice, or mechanically louvered. A solid roof pergola has the benefit of being completely waterproof and can turn areas such as a grilling station or dining table into places that can be used in nearly any weather. Louvred and lattice pergolas are mainly used for shade, providing diffused light and comfort throughout the day. Common pergola roof shapes include a flat top (which will still have a small pitch for proper drainage), or a gabled V-shape or peak. A gabled pergola can feel more spacious, much like vaulted ceilings in your home. It's best to choose a pergola roof shape and style that matches the architecture of your home.

  • Yes! We can anchor your pergola to the pavers. You can also anchor into artificial turf, decking, natural grass or concrete.
