Expert Tips for Maintaining and Sealing Your Paver Patio or Driveway
Published Date: Aug 1, 2024
At System Pavers, we specialize in designing and building incredibly durable spaces that are easy to maintain. This allows homeowners to spend more time enjoying their outdoors and less time keeping up with it. However, there is basic DIY care people can do to help ensure they have a beautiful outdoor space that lasts for generations.
Keep It Clean
Simple but consistent cleaning makes overall paver maintenance much less of a chore. We recommend regularly sweeping paving stone paths, patios, and driveways to clear debris or using a hose to wash away dirt. To keep dirt and grime from building up, consider pressure washing your hardscape surfaces annually.
Pressure washers can usually be rented from your local hardware store or purchased if you prefer the convenience of always having one around. We carry a power washer in our System Pavers Outdoor Store that’s powerful, affordable, and easy to store.
DIY Paver Sealant Tips
If you have a paving stone patio or driveway, you may want to seal it periodically. This can bring back its natural luster and make an already durable space even more durable. At System Pavers, we use and recommend brands like Seal’n Lock, Techniseal, and BP Pro. However, it’s important to note that these sealants are a maintenance product and will wear off over time. With options like wet look, natural look, or enhanced color, you can slightly alter the appearance of your pavers depending on which sealant you choose.
Before applying sealant, check your local weather forecast. Sealing pavers is the type of DIY project you’ll want to do when there’s no rain in the forecast for several days in a row.
To get started, first remove all furniture and debris from the area you’re sealing. This is a great time to inspect your pavers and make any repairs if needed. You can add sand to the joints between your pavers if they’ve gotten low. Use a broom to sweep the sand into the cracks and ensure they’re filled evenly.
Then, it’s time to break out the power washer! At this stage, you may also want to apply a paver cleaner to remove any remaining stains. When you’re done cleaning and have thoroughly rinsed everything, allow the pavers to dry completely. It may take 24-48 hours.
Once you’ve selected your sealant, apply with a roller or sprayer. It’s a good idea to wear protective gear, such as gloves and goggles during the process. We also suggest testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure you like the finish.
Avoid overlapping your sealant as it can create darker spots in places where the sealant has built up. Once you’re finished, let the sealer dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually that’s another 24-48 hours.
After that, your pavers will be sealed and set up for maximum enjoyment. It’s safe to put your patio furniture and planters back in place and get back to relaxing in your beautiful outdoors.
